Natural scene statistics mediate the perception of image complexity

چکیده
Humans are sensitive to complexity and regularity in patterns [YKM13, FK97]. The subjective perception of pattern complexity is correlated to algorithmic (Kolmogorov-Chaitin) complexity as defined in computer science [LV08], but also to the frequency of naturally occurring patterns [HGS10]. However, the possible mediational role of natural frequencies in the perception of algorithmic complexity remains unclear. Here we reanalyze [HGS10] through a mediational analysis, and complement their results in a new experiment. We conclude that human perception of complexity seems partly shaped by natural scenes statistics, thereby establishing a link between the perception of complexity and the effect of natural scene statistics.

Natural image statistics mediate brightness ‘ filling in ’ Steven
Although the human visual system can accurately estimate the reflectance (or lightness) of surfaces under enormous variations in illumination, two equiluminant grey regions can be induced to appear quite different simply by placing a light–dark luminance transition between them. This illusion, the Craik–Cornsweet– O’Brien (CCOB) effect, has been taken as evidence for a low-level ‘filling-in’ me...
متن کاملCompressed-Sampling-Based Image Saliency Detection in the Wavelet Domain
When watching natural scenes, an overwhelming amount of information is delivered to the Human Visual System (HVS). The optic nerve is estimated to receive around 108 bits of information a second. This large amount of information can’t be processed right away through our neural system. Visual attention mechanism enables HVS to spend neural resources efficiently, only on the selected parts of the...

In image processing, efficiency term refers to the ability in capturing significant information that is sensitive to human visual system with small description. Natural images or scenes that contain intrinsic geometrical structures (contours) are key features of visual information. The existing transform methods like Fourier transformation, wavelets, curvelets, ridgelets etc., have limitations ...
متن کاملNatural scene text localization using edge color signature
Localizing text regions in images taken from natural scenes is one of the challenging problems dueto variations in font, size, color and orientation of text. In this paper, we introduce a new concept socalled Edge Color Signature for localizing text regions in an image. This method is able to localizeboth Farsi and English texts. In the proposed method rst a pyramid using diff...
متن کاملDifferent spatial frequency bands selectively signal for natural image statistics in the early visual system.
Early visual evoked potentials (VEPs) measured in humans have recently been observed to be modulated by the image statistics of natural scene imagery. Specifically, the early VEP is dominated by a strong positivity when participants view minimally complex natural scene imagery, with the magnitude of that component being modulated by luminance contrast differences across spatial frequency (i.e.,...
